Martin,

Nice fish. Wish I had caught fish like that 20 days ago. I was out a couple of days ago. Cold and beautiful, but empty.

My wife and I are planning a trip to Strobel in 2011, but so far we keep getting redirected to Loop, which is hard on the bank! Any information on your lodging at strobel would be so much appreciated. We live in Alaska and would be happy to exchange information if interested. Awsome trip!

Welcome to the forum and to GFF as a whole. Your small stream looks very intriguing! Nice photo!

But the rod is indeed odd! It looks as if the handle has been turned upside down.

Martin,

You're right about that rod - it's a piece of work OK. No, the handle is not mounted upside down. Here's what Montgomery Ward had to say about the rod in their 1959 Outdoor Sports catalog:

"[b:dddc5798ae]All Purpose Panfish Rod.[/b:dddc5798ae] Land a Blue-gill, Brim or Perch with sturdy 2-piece solid fiber glass "responsive action" rod. Also suited for other still or fly fishing. Polished aluminum fly rod yreel sest. Chrome plated ferrule with 4 snake guides and tip top set in contrasting cluster of nylon windings. Composition cork grip, polished Aluminum reel seat with screw locking ring. Packed in plastic bag. Actual wt. 4 ozs., 7 ft. length. [i:dddc5798ae]Mailable[/i:dddc5798ae]. [b:dddc5798ae]$3.75[/b:dddc5798ae]"

It came with a open frame reel ($0.89). I "upgraded" to the weighted Pflueger 1495 to get the rod and reel into balance.

Nothing to brag about, but for a kid of 11 it was all that I needed to get started in fly fishing. As I said, I still fish it regularly; sort of sentimental favorite.

Johnny,

This is as much an ad as any review of a good product. And the Whiting products ARE good! Simple as that.

Would make a great "guide fly" for bass or pickerel as you could make up extra bodies and replace them on the treble hook as the fish tear them up. This could save money on hooks. Pretty sure Mustad wouldn't agree!

again another great fly, I use a fly thats similar called a lighting bug the pattern is a TMC 200R # 10-16, 6/0 thread black, black goose biot tail, black holo tinsel (med) body, black uni-wire rib, black thin skin wing case with black flashabou accent, black ice dubbing thorax, three to four turns of black hen hackle, you can add a black bead if you like or not, caught my largest trout of the season on a # 14 beadheaded version a 22" redband trout fom the chewaucan river in october 09, sometimes you need to visit the dark side, keep up the informantable arctile's and let the fur and feathers fly.

Again another well written arctile,This fly is the results of leaving a box of nymphs alone in the dark wierd things result from innerbreading you mix a biot bug with a flashback hares ears, and throw in a bead head and wala you have a universal nymph good fly use both the hare's ear, black, and dark olive version with great results keep up the good arctiles.

Very good article,I have allway's wondered about people who have time to keep and neat and tidy box of flies who are they trying to impress not me if you've got time to clean and keep your fly box neat and tidy you're not fishing. Also like you I belive in the K.I.S.S.(keep it simple stupid) theory so I only tie patterns that work and keep a box of flies that are just ones that failed who knows maybe the'll work on some body of water you never know well back to tying keep up the goo stories comming and let the fur and feathers fly

Cornelis,

No problem! I just want to make sure that the "official!" GFF policy is clear.

What you do as a private person is your sake - even though I'd think that buying a DVD bow and then is a good idea. ;-)

Martin

Martin is not my intention to put people to illegal to do sorry.
I write my posts as a new member in your forum, about my technique and people can ask about that on fisheries.
Greeting: Cornelis

Cornelis,

While I certainly appreciate your DVD recommendations on Spey and two hand casting, I cannot say that I'm overly enthused by your advice to download these videos from the web.

First of all it's illegal and secondly it's cheating the people who put time and money into making the productions in the first place.

What you do yourself is your own business (even though I don't condone it), but I don't want you to recommend breaking the law on The Global FlyFisher.

There are plenty videos and trailers out there, which can be had for free. We have just launched our own online fly fishing video channel here on GFF. There are endless hours of fishing video to be picked up there.

But when it comes to [b:68a0ac0b13]commercial products[/b:68a0ac0b13], please [b:68a0ac0b13]buy your copies[/b:68a0ac0b13] and support those who make the videos. They are not getting fat or rich as it is, and pirating their stuff certainly won't help!

Fred,

This is a really old jacket, and probably discontinued from Nomad. I bought mine close to 20 years ago, and actually threw it in the garbage just weeks ago. I have moved from my house recently and the Nomad-jacket was one of the things I had to let go. I liked it very much, but it had served its time, and completely lost its breathability and main purpose, namely keeping me dry when I'm fishing.

You can see the current Nomad web site here - not beautiful, but anyway...

This is a fabulous section of GFF. Most of the videos are amazing. Congradulations to GFF team and producers, you had assembled a "grand cru" here. Cheers!

Hello Radoslav, I like to come over to Bulgaria to fish the brown or rainbow on a river in your country not to far from Sofia. I have my personal raisons to come over there but it has to be on a river and fly-fish only. If it exist I like to fish catch and release. Can you give me some info about my questions. Thank you.

Since you got this far …

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
