Does anyone have a contact number or e-mail for Oliver Edwards? I live in BC Canada. Please advise me via my e-mail. Tight lines to all!

I have been a keen coarse fisherman for many years, now beginner at fly-fishing. This is a fantastic and simple to understand article which has saved me a lot of questions and made it much easier to purchase my first reel, backing, line and tippet. Now I just need to practice my casting so I dont hook my shirt, trousers, lip, nostril, or anybody else close to me, aha !

diffenately a hottly debated topic even amoung those who fish

as with everything moderation
except fly tying of course

I wonder what PETA's point of view is on "serious invasive fish species"

If I fish in a system where there are invasive fish species, which is detrimental to the ecosystem, I kill those fish.
I return the dead fish to the system, to be part of the food chain again.
I am sure that the smaller indigenous species that feed on the dead fish is only too gratefull of the freebie.

Thanks for this.
Some real clever thinking in the whole logo.
Want to place this logo on our club website, and maybe some bumper stickers as well.

Paul,

Thanks! You and I have fished together and we both keep and release fish. I sometimes wonder why there has to be such debate about the subject. I have rarely (if ever) found myself in situations where I didn't know whether to take or release a fish. Common sense seems to be a very good guideline, and my own very firm rule is: when in doubt, simply release the fish! Only keep fish when you are 100% sure that it's OK.

Michal,

The Helios will do well. I have used it for my sea trout fishing, for pike and for Pacific salmon, never maintained it other than an occasional rinse and the brake and the reel as a whole still works like a charm.

This is a very well constructed reel. May seem "ordinary" and a bit boring, but it easily matches the best reels I have tried.

I have seen it in three sizes, and the largest one holds 150 yards of backing. It will take a brutal rainbow to empty that!

Martin

Hi Martin!
I'll check the helios option. Thank you. I'm looking for a reel that would serve me well in my trip to NZ. And survive raibow trout on the run. I just got the message from someone in Taupo that trout emptied his reel in seconds including backing. I don't want to see nuts and bolts flying around while hooking a fish of life.

Very good looking fly. I have only started tying flies this year and I tied one up yesterday and it was easy. Many thanks.

Excellent article Martin, Thanks for shedding a little light on this unclear and sensitive subject.

David,

I know that GFF partner Kasper brought a rod and some flies to Italy and fished the Mediterranean. He brought classical saltwater streamers of the Popovich-kind and had success with small but strong fish.

Martin

Michal,

I guessed that was what you meant!

I have seen a DVD with the people behind BromannoDell, and they ARE real people, but it sure is annoying when operations like this do not return your emails.

The brand is really rare. I have never seen the products in any shops - on or offline.

Personally I'd go for something well known and proven. My current personal favorite bang-for-the-buck reel is my Okuma Helios, which can be had for about 150 US$ - a steal if you ask me. This is a real quality reel, nice to look at and very well made.

Martin

Martin, i fully share your atitude and like your "kind of pragmatic way". i do absolutely the same way in my life.

David,

be the fiorst on this page sending report about Greece! take some shrimp immitation or black zulu style fies, I am sure you will hooke into some pelagics. i saw plenty of kind of small mullets. so mullets will be your target especialyn in a small harbours

pls remember to take some local drink in order to kill your human smell befor you go fishing :D

Ponoco,

welcome! i wish i were same lucky boy to get fly rot at 11. I remember at my 11 i was building my first fly line buy welding 1mm mono to 0.8mm mono and so on. well it was the end of Soviet era 1988ties it took nother 5 year until i got a real fly fishing line :D

i am not complaining i am just stating history

keep that rod as one of the best gift in your life

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
