I am looking for an original Carrie Steven's tied Grey Ghost. Any idea where to find ?
O_live,
No, unfortunately not. I know the guy who tied it and may be able to track down a pattern. It looks pretty simple: wool head with eyes and some flash for a tail, but I will see what I can do.

Hi,
have you got a fly patern of this fly ?
thannks

Peter,
I don't know whether any Danish shops have it, but Springforelle in Germany provided the DVD for review, and you can easily order it there.

I think the CDC&Elk as described above is a very efficient and innovative solution. The beauty of this tying techniqe is that you avoid a dubbing rope all together and you don't need to invest in any special tools for dealing with the CDC feather. There is a nice description on the classification and selection of CDC feathers that I believe H. Weilenmann authored. This has helped me immensely. There is even a very straight-forward video of the technique available on the internet.
This is a relatively simple fly to tie. I have tied the fly with a light yellow CDC feather and elk hair dyed a soft green. It has worked extremely well for me and I have incorporated the pattern into my Top 10 of "must-have" flies.
Pretty fly but I wouldn't recommend using a fly with a bend point! :)
Martin. Nice review.
Where in Denmark can i buy this dvd ? Or is it only available over the internet ?
Bob, nice brown you have there, beautiful pics of the small stream. Was he taken on a dry?
Hi Martin, my name is Martin and I just read your comments. I agree on your comments and being from Patagonia, I found it very well done, but a little slow. It lacks (on my humble opinion, and maybe I am wrong) that sense of adventure that moved Mel and other great fishermen to Patagonia in the first place. The guys who did the DVD are excellent people and did a huge effort with it. I hope their next DVD put a lot more excitement.
Anyways, I think Global Fly Fisher is excellent, great interaction with mere mortals like me and lots, LOTS of useful information. Tight lines and continue doing a great job. Martin Carranza
Martin,
You've been here several times and never had a close encounter with yogi? Well, the next time you head this way we'll have to show ya a few of those toothy critters, both Blacks and Grizzle.
Here's a pic of one I took a couple of weeks ago about 3 kms from my house. He was hiding, pretending he was a tree.....
Hi, Jonathan,
my personal opinion-
If you are beginer then 15 foot 10 weight will best if you planing to fish ina rivers with width of 50-100 m.
again my personal opinion - be carefull with spey lines which will be offered to you by salesmen. I would chosse shooting head system. Why- easy undercast and overhead cast+you can play with a depth by choosing different sinking rate of you head.
as i said this is my personal opinion after 14 years of salmon fishing

Jeff,
There is no set rule for the length of leader, but 1-1.5 rod lengths is a good starting point. In your case a 9' leader will probably be a good choice. But you may need to vary this depending on your casting skills (bad=short leader) and how spooky the fish are (very spooky=longer leader). But if you start with a 9' tapered leader I think you're good.
And the tippet is the piece of line that you tie to the terminal end of your leader. Rather than tying the fly directly on the leader and cutting off a piece of that every time you change, you tie on a piece of straight monofilament in the pound test you want to fish. When you change your fly, this is the line you cut, and when you have shortened this tippet down too much, you change it and leave the leader (almost) intact.
Hope this helps. Enjoy your trip.

would you diagram this out please for the novice. i have an opportunity to go to a really good location very shortly. i specifically need help with leader to fly line, how long is the leader, and where and what the heck is a tippet anyway and do i definately need one or can i just use a 4 to 6 lb leader. also, how long should the leader be. fly rod is a #4
7 1/2 ft.
thanks
I have a length of bead-chain that I was thinking of using on my freshwater Clouser's in place of the barbell eyes. I think that these will be more effective whenever you dont need the weight centered at the head.
If I were to put the weight on the shank, instead of just the head, I would have a more even action to the streamer. The barbell eyes make me feel as though I am Jig fishing. I don't know what I am doing to provoke a take with them. Thanks for reminding me that chain beads are a great option.
Martin,
Thanks for the well thought out article, it has my mind whirling. I have made a connection between this bare tube fly and the simple tube and hook we use in the northeast to catch Snapper Bluefish. I'm wondering if there isn't a similarity between them. I know that the tube(in Snapper fishing) acts as a flashy 'bubbler'. Perhaps this open tube creates the same aggressive response. I'll try it on other trout streamers to see.
By the by...if you are a flea market hound, you will occasionally come across a short jacket from the 40's which is made of Monkey fur. I have passed them by before, but now will grab one if I see it.
Thanks again, tim
Um... what the heck is that? It has some brookie markings, but it's decidedly not a brookie.
Your rods have always been the gold standard, Dave. Every detail has been given proper attention.
Thompsonfly,
The legs are made from black or white nylon brush as you can see from the pattern description on the main page. Click on the image to get there.

… I have a small favor to ask.
Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.
The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
