The hand wip-finish has always been a bit of a problem for most tiers. Myself at one time, all I used was a half hitch tool and it worked fine, as you know three wraps on a half hitch tool and you've done a whip finish. Now I'm using the Matarelli whip finish tool, took me a while to get used to it, and now its all I ever use.. Your video is very good, and should help those that want to do the hand whip..
Thank you I really enjoy your sight.

Hi Ruan

I have one of these IC3 reels, funny creatures... I like the cassette idea (I had one from Leeda/Dragonfly before), but unfortunately the craftsmanship on the Scierra reels isn't really top notch, but then again the price is quite reasonable...
Despite this I use my IC3 reel for most of my coastal fishing.

And now to the funny part...
I had similar problems with getting the cassettes off, perhaps not 20 minutes of wrestling, but long enough. Then I took my gear with me on a plane to Norway, where I did a bit of fishing on the south coast. Then, when I was about to change lines, to my amazement the cassette came off without any effort (almost causing me to drop it into the water). When I tried the other two I had with me they where the same. I don't know why...

Apart from this I had one defect cassette, where some air had gotten trapped during molding. I complained and got two new ones instead.

Taking the plane to Norway (or somewhere else) is probably a bit too expensive in order to fix your reel, so I guess going back to the dealer is your best bet.

Cheers,
/atli

Hi Martin,

Thanks, It is the same with all cassettes , have cleaned all parts over and over, but it makes no difference.

I will go to my dealer and watch him try to get the cassette off....

Thanks,

Ruan.

Ruan,

It should come off easily, and almost "drop" off as far as I understand. I have only handled the reel a couple of times, but looking at the image on Scierra's web page http://www.scierra.com/?product=20 it seems like you loosen the spool part from the housing and simply drop off the cassette.

Are the surfaces clean and free of scratches etc.? If there's something stuck between the spool part and the cassette and the fit is tight, you might have the problem there. Is it the same with all cassettes? You might have a flaw in a single one. If not the spool might be out of shape. It is plastic (or at least a compound) after all.

Apart from that it's back to the dealer and complain...

I am an amateur fly tyer. I have used feathers but never of a Wood Duck. I recently found a Wood Duck killed by a predatory animal. Thank you for I hope to put your methods upon tying to use to make flies of higher standard to catch fish better. Very efficient site!!!

Hi folks:

Let me answer a few questions at once here...

Chenille Body: of course you can use chenille...nothing wrong with that. I prefer some sparkle to attract the fish's attention, hence why I use dubbing, but sparkly chenille would do the trick as well...good thinking.

Alligator clip holders: Search for "note clip holder" and plenty of links come up. An idea: contact one of the corporate promotional vendors and ask for any excess or mistake printed items.

Thanks for the questions!

I really dont know what i was thinking, offcourse its mUrky.
Sometimes its better to be quiet and let people think you are a wise man, instead of speaking and prove the opposite ;-)

Regards Allan

Ps. Just checked with the translator, looks like i have invented a brand new word... MERKY... go figure.
:-)

Eelke,

Welcome to GFF - I certainly hop you will catch some sea trout in April! I plan on fishing a lot in April, so they'd better be there!

Martin

Allan,

I was the one who edited the text... it's been edited back to your original.
Can I ask: what is merky?
I was sure it was murky misspelled.

You can find the recipe for Taylor's Fat Albert at the following address on the Orvis website. It's under the Fly Fishing home page at the bottom under Fly Fishing Tools and click on Hot Flies. It is then at the bottom of the page. It's a really easy fly to tie in any size!

Tight Lines!

Ed.: The direct link is here.

Declan,

I think fishing is open in April, and as you know, fish can potentially be caught all year round as long as there is open water.
But my guess is that it's a bit early in the season and very unstable. Austrian waters probably have a lot of runoff and would be likely to go high and milky from the glaciers and snow melting, On the other hand: if you can find clear water and the weather is agreeable, you might be lucky.
Most sources do quote late summer and autumn as the prime season in Austria.

Martin

Gabrial,

I have to ask: does this look like a shop? If it does, we're doing something terribly wrong!
This is a non-commercial online magazine, and we're selling nothing.
If you want to buy tools for bamboo rod making, you will have to turn to shops, which sell such stuff. Follow the links in this article and the comments or use a search page on the web to find lots of other resources, amongst those most likely some shops.

The GFF money box

… I have a small favor to ask.

Long story short

Support the Global FlyFisher through several different channels, including PayPal.

Long story longer

The Global FlyFisher has been online since the mid-90's and has been free to access for everybody since day one – and will stay free for as long as I run it.
But that doesn't mean that it's free to run.
It costs money to drive a large site like this.
